The incentive of this work was to apply techniques for preparing the phonograph as a method for composing an instrumental Hip-Hop album. Research into the phonograph as an instrument, its relationship to Hip-Hop and methods of preparing the phonograph were taken. The subject of the work was to demonstrate the possibilities of composing instrumental Hip-Hop music using only a phonograph, vinyl discs and an audio-mixer. The aid of software sequencers, post-production automation and effect were not considered, allowing only live manipulation to be performed. The work of music, titled Pop Beats, is an eighteen-track album influenced by contemporary Hip-Hop beat makers such as J Dilla, Madlib, Samiyam and Flying Lotus.
